EFFECT: The magician passes a cane through his female assistant without the benefit of any cover.
PREPARATION: To perform this effect you will need two canes — a vanishing cane and an appearing cane. Using metal canes for this effect will create the best illusion, as they act much faster than the plastic variety.
PERFORMANCE NUMBER ONE: This effect can be performed as part of a routine or as a stand alone illusion. Timing and practice are the keys to its impact. The magician places the vanishing cane against his assistants back, while she holds the appearing cane in her hands against her stomach. At a prearranged signal, the magician vanishes his cane and the assistant appears hers at the same exact time. The illusion of the cane passing through the girl is perfect.
PERFORMANCE NUMBER TWO: An alternative effect can be achieved by placing a twelve inch silk square in each cane. As the magician vanishes his cane, a silk appears in his hands. When the assistant’s cane appears, the silk she has been holding in her hands disappears. This creates the illusion that the cane and silk have passed each other while passing through her body. The assistant now holds the magician’s cane and he holds the assistant’s silk.
CURTAIN CALL: This effect was originated and taught to me by the late Master Magician Bill Joy. While the cane, which appears in the assistant’s hands, appears to be reversed, I believe no one has ever picked this up. However, if you feel it necessary to compensate for this, you could paint any white tips black. It has always created a lasting impression on the audiences for which I have performed it. An indication of this was shown in drawings presented to me by schoolchildren a few days after they saw my show. The performance featured such items as the Sub Trunk, Super-X Suspension, Temple Beneres, a dove act and much more. Yet many of the children, when asked what amazed them the most, drew a picture of the Cane Thru The Girl.
